Lessons from both sides of the transaction

Whit’s eBay Field Notes

Practical observations gathered through years of buying, selling, packing, researching, communicating, and occasionally learning something the hard way.

Experience, Not Commandments

These notes are not official eBay instructions. They are Whit’s personal observations about habits that can make marketplace transactions clearer, calmer, and more successful. Every item, seller, buyer, and situation is different—and eBay’s current policies always govern activity on its platform.

For Buyers

  • Read the entire description, not only the title.
  • Study every photograph and ask questions before purchasing.
  • Check measurements, condition notes, shipping costs, and return terms.
  • Compare similar items while remembering that condition, completeness, and provenance can change value.
  • Use saved searches and offers thoughtfully rather than letting urgency make the decision.
  • Review seller feedback for patterns, not merely the percentage.

For Sellers

  • Describe flaws plainly and photograph them clearly.
  • Include useful measurements, model numbers, dates, and identifying marks.
  • Package an item for the journey it will actually experience.
  • Research completed sales, not only optimistic asking prices.
  • Write searchable titles without making claims the item cannot support.
  • Keep records of photographs, shipping, correspondence, and expenses.
  • Treat customer service as part of the product.

Lessons From Both Sides

Communication Prevents Surprises

A brief, courteous question or explanation before a transaction is usually easier than untangling assumptions afterward.

Condition Is Context

“Vintage,” “rare,” and “collectible” do not erase wear. Clear condition details help both sides decide whether an item is right for them.

Stories Add Meaning; Facts Build Trust

The history of an object can make it fascinating, but separate documented facts, informed observations, and family lore.

The Field Notes Will Keep Growing

Future notes may explore photographs, titles, research, offers, packing unusual objects, customer communication, and memorable lessons from the early Gnubay years.

Important: These are personal observations, not legal, tax, financial, appraisal, authentication, shipping-carrier, or official eBay advice. Policies and circumstances change. Consult the applicable platform rules and qualified professionals when needed.
